Sam Iurada is a passionate advocate for children's mental health and neurodiversity. Diagnosed with ADHD five years ago, she is the mother of two remarkable children: Charlie, who has Autism and ADHD, and a daughter with severe dyslexia.
As a neurodivergent individual raising neurodivergent children, Sam has firsthand experience navigating the complexities and challenges that come with unique brain wiring. From social anxiety and sensory processing difficulties to academic hurdles, her family’s journey has shaped her dedication to fostering understanding, promoting early intervention, and creating supportive communities.
Sam believes that neurodiversity brings incredible strengths, including creative thinking, deep empathy, and resilience. However, she also acknowledges the significant challenges neurodivergent individuals face in a world not designed for them. Her approach emphasizes the importance of education, open communication, and empathy in building inclusive environments.
One of Sam’s proudest moments involves her son Charlie, who has overcome immense challenges, including school refusal, panic attacks, and struggles with friendships. At just 11 years old, Charlie has learned to articulate his needs and foster understanding among his peers. In one instance, he explained how his brain works, likening it to flicking through 10 TV channels at once. This openness led to a collaborative solution with his friends, who developed a simple cue, “1 channel,” to support him during moments of overwhelm.
Sam’s personal journey as a parent has not been without its difficulties. She has experienced intense anxiety and worry, often feeling overwhelmed by the weight of her responsibilities. However, she credits a strong network of supportive friends and fellow parents for helping her through the most challenging times.
Today, Sam is committed to breaking down stigma surrounding neurodiversity, raising awareness, and empowering families to embrace their unique stories. She works to create spaces where parents and carers feel heard and supported, while also advocating for inclusive communities that celebrate the differences that make us all unique.
Sam’s mission is clear: to ensure that every child, regardless of their neurodiversity, has the opportunity to thrive in an environment of understanding and acceptance.
